What the figures rest on
Legal tech. A control loop. A venture on the high seas.
A case begins like a first departure: land in sight, the chart incomplete, the weather open. Whoever computes at once computes the wrong sea. Halyard-Lex does not begin with the figure. It begins at the helm.
1. Setting out
The first venture is not a model. It is the moment when a set of facts has to become a course: sue, settle, leave it be.
On the high seas anything can happen — a turn at the next instance, a different culture of settlement, a rule that held yesterday. So the destination is not invoked. The line is laid.
A halyard raises the sail and sets the mast into the wind. No line, no canvas. No canvas, no course. The case file is that line. It hauls the case up until it can be seen.
2. Measuring where regulation bites
Cybernetics means steering by feedback. Steering without measurement is opinion.
The case file first looks for the thresholds at which the law takes hold — not for the narrative. Deadline. Form. Burden of proof. State of resolutions. Source reference. Time of retrieval.
Each of these points is a buoy. Green, amber and red are not a mood. They are a sounding. Where the buoy is missing, the logbook says assumption — not a percentage on the chart.
Computed is not supported. Supported is not asserted. That is the first rule of navigation.
3. Holding the corridor
Measurement does not yield a point. It yields a fairway.
The corridor is the span within which a reasonable opponent still goes along and a reasonable client still goes along. Within it lie expected value, costs, duration, settlement zone — and the uncertainty that belongs to them.
Until the corridor stands, every single figure is theatre. “What the case is worth” means this space, not a sum.
Approval stays with the lawyer. You do not hand the helm to the sea.
4. Only then the reckoning on the water
Only once course and fairway are set may one compute what happens on a moving sea.
Monte Carlo is not an oracle. It is the swell: many runs of the same facts, so that it becomes visible how wide the water is — not how bold the statement.
Game theory is not a ruse. It is the second ship in the same fairway. Where reservation values overlap, a settlement arises. Where they do not, the proceedings remain.
Both hang on the line. No simulation replaces a missing source reference. No equilibrium heals (n = 0). As the evidence grows — assumption becoming measurement — the case file stays the same. Only the sea becomes easier to read.
5. Logbook
The method does not sell the machine. It sells the order of things:
Setting out → measuring where regulation bites → holding the corridor → computing → approving → holding the track.
That is why this page does not come first. First comes the case file. Here is why a halyard is not a sail — and why science at sea casts the lead before it tosses the coin.
In closing
Halyard-Lex provides a traceable basis for work and for decisions. Legal assessment and approval remain with the instructed lawyer. Results are not an assurance of how proceedings will end. They are flags hoisted: orientation for the client — and for all who do not stand at the helm and do not know the high seas.
